Roku screen cast features let you display photos, videos, apps, presentations, and more on your television. Depending on your device, you can mirror an entire screen or cast content directly from a supported app. This guide explains how Roku screen cast works, what you need, and how to fix common connection problems.

What Roku Screen Cast Means

“Roku screen cast” can refer to two different methods: screen mirroring and app-based casting.

Screen mirroring duplicates your phone, tablet, or Windows computer screen on the TV. Everything visible on the source device appears on your Roku, including menus and notifications. This is useful for photos, websites, presentations, and apps that do not support casting.

Casting sends a video, song, or photo from a compatible app to Roku. The Roku streams the content directly, while your phone works mainly as a remote control. You may see a Cast icon in apps such as YouTube or supported streaming services.

Apple devices generally use AirPlay rather than Android-style screen mirroring. Roku supports AirPlay on many—but not all—Roku TVs and streaming players, provided the device has compatible Roku software.

Prepare Your Roku for Casting

Before trying to cast, connect your Roku and source device to the same Wi-Fi network. Using different networks, such as a guest network and a regular home network, can prevent discovery.

On a Roku device, check the network by going to:

Settings > Network > About

For Android or Windows screen mirroring, enable Roku’s setting under:

Settings > System > Screen mirroring

You may see options such as:

For Apple devices, open:

Settings > Apple AirPlay and HomeKit

Set AirPlay to On if that option is available. You can also review security and code settings from this menu.

Update Roku by selecting:

Settings > System > Software update > Check now

Also update the operating system and relevant apps on your phone, tablet, or computer. Compatibility can depend on the Roku model, Roku OS version, and the app being used.

How to Screen Mirror Android to Roku

Android screen-mirroring menus vary by manufacturer. The feature may be called Cast, Screen Cast, Smart View, Wireless Display, or Screen Share.

  1. Turn on the Roku TV or connect the Roku player to your television.
  2. Confirm that the Android device and Roku use the same Wi-Fi network.
  3. Open Android’s quick settings by swiping down from the top of the screen.
  4. Tap Cast, Smart View, or the similar screen-sharing option.
  5. Select your Roku device from the list.
  6. Approve the connection on the Roku if prompted.

If your phone does not show a Roku, open Settings and search for “cast” or “screen mirroring.” Some Android phones do not support Miracast, the wireless standard Roku uses for many Android mirroring connections. In that situation, use the casting button inside a compatible app instead.

To stop mirroring, open the same Android control and choose Disconnect, Stop casting, or the Roku device again.

How to Cast from iPhone, iPad, Windows, and Apps

iPhone and iPad

For an Apple device, open a supported video or photo app and tap the AirPlay icon. Choose your Roku from the device list. For full-screen mirroring:

  1. Open Control Center.
  2. Tap Screen Mirroring.
  3. Select your Roku.
  4. Enter the AirPlay code shown on the TV if requested.

To stop, return to Control Center, tap Screen Mirroring, and select Stop Mirroring.

Windows PC

Windows screen mirroring requires a compatible Roku and a computer that supports wireless display connections.

  1. Press Windows + K.
  2. Select your Roku from the list.
  3. Approve the request on the Roku.

You can also open Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays > Connect to a wireless display, depending on your Windows version. If the Roku is missing, verify that Wi-Fi is enabled on the computer and that the computer supports Miracast.

Casting from supported apps

Casting is often more reliable than mirroring. Open an app such as YouTube, find a video, and tap the Cast or AirPlay button. Choose your Roku, then use the phone to pause, seek, or select another video.

Not every app supports Roku casting. If no Roku appears, look for a Roku app version, use AirPlay, or mirror the entire screen where supported. A streaming subscription may still be required even when casting works.

Fix Roku Screen Cast Problems

If Roku screen cast is not working, try these solutions in order:

Some copyrighted content cannot be mirrored because of digital rights restrictions. A black screen or playback error may be caused by the app rather than the Roku.

Roku Screen Cast FAQ

Can I cast from any phone to Roku? No. Android support depends on the phone’s screen-mirroring technology, while iPhones use AirPlay on compatible Roku devices. App-based casting also depends on whether the app supports Roku.

Why does my Roku not appear when I try to cast? The devices may be on different networks, Roku screen mirroring or AirPlay may be disabled, or the Roku model may not support the connection method. Restarting both devices and checking Wi-Fi usually helps.

Can I cast without Wi-Fi? Normally, no. Roku casting and mirroring require a local wireless network. A phone hotspot may work in some cases, but the Roku and source device must connect to the same hotspot, and performance may be limited.

Roku screen cast is easiest when both devices are updated and connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Use app-based casting for smoother streaming, and choose screen mirroring or AirPlay when you need to display content that does not include a cast button.
